We're ordinary people spreading love
Who We Are
Extended Family was started as a COVID-19 volunteer project in March 2020. A group of volunteers from Journey Church got together to run pick-up and groceries delivery, free of cost, for the most vulnerable North Calgary community members so they can stay safe at home. Also, with the support of donors, we delivered free emergency hampers to neighbours thereby doing our bits to ensure no one goes hungry during the shelter-in-place order.
With the ease of the lockdown, we observed a drop in demand for our services and we decided to wind down the COVID project in July 2020. We had a choice to either totally shut down Extended Family or look for other means to continue to create positive impacts in our community. We chose the latter and we are proud of the decision knowing it is the least we should be doing from civic and moral standpoints.
A keen observation of forums and groups on the web has revealed that more than ever, people are willing to extend helping hands to each other. Thus, we want to continue to galvanize this movement by organizing impact-driven initiatives anyone can participate in and also disseminate opportunities for volunteering in our communities. In the meantime, we will continue to operate from Calgary (YYC) and hopefully extend the service to other cities in Canada as soon as we can!
Ultimately, the COVID-19 pandemic has expanded the functional meaning of ‘Extended Family’ beyond relatives to include friends and neighbours who care about each other’s well-being. Indeed, this is heart-warming and we want you to know that you are part of our clan. So, feel free to say hello (via our contact us page), we will be enthused to get to know you and share deep camaraderie together.
